Alien Parasites, Antarctic Booze, and the King of PR Chaos: Bo Shurling on The Thing!: Episode 059- S6Some films age like fine wine. Others, like John Carpenter’s The Thing, age like a bottle of whiskey forgotten in a snowbank — sharper, stronger, and still capable of knocking you flat after one sip.

On this frostbitten episode of the Adult Beverage Film Podcast, we pack up our gear, crack open our survival rations (read: adult beverages), and trek into the icy paranoia of one of cinema’s greatest horror thrillers. Our guide through this Antarctic nightmare? None other than Bo Shurling — unit publicist, award-winner, celebrity wrangler, and the only human alive who can coordinate a Samuel L. Jackson press tour in the morning, bowl with Cameron Diaz by lunch, and still have enough energy to debate alien shapeshifters over a cold beer.

Why The Thing Still Freezes Your Soul

Carpenter’s 1982 masterpiece isn’t just about who’s “infected” — it’s about how much tension you can pack into a claustrophobic research station with a flamethrower shortage. The film’s practical effects remain the gold standard for gooey, gory, “oh-my-God-is-that-moving?” horror. Watching The Thing today is like biting into a frozen jalapeño: cold as hell, but still with a burn.

Bo’s take? It’s not just the monsters that keep you up at night — it’s the mistrust, the isolation, and the way Carpenter makes you start suspecting everyone, even the guy passing you the whiskey.

Bo’s Behind-the-Scenes Gold

Between sips, Bo dropped some Hollywood set stories that made us laugh harder than we should’ve with all that impending doom on screen. From the delicate art of keeping A-listers happy in sub-zero conditions to why Antarctic researchers apparently never have enough flamethrowers (someone get OSHA on this), Bo reminded us that sometimes the real drama is happening off camera.

Our Takeaway? Trust No One. And Bring Extra Booze.

The Thing is more than a horror film — it’s a masterclass in tension, a lesson in trust (or lack thereof), and proof that nothing good ever happens when you split into smaller groups in a frozen wasteland.

So we did what we do best: laughed through the terror, debated the ending (seriously, who had the whiskey?), and raised a glass to Carpenter’s knack for making us check under the couch for alien goo.

If you’ve ever wondered what happens when you mix top-tier horror analysis, a little Hollywood gossip, and a few too many drinks, this episode is for you.

So grab your parka, pour yourself something strong (preferably not from an unmarked bottle next to a blood test), and join Kent, Laura, Patrick, Squeeker, and Bo as we dig deep into The Thing — the only way we know how — with laughter, libations, and just enough suspicion to side-eye your co-hosts.

Anora (Sean Baker): Episode 058- S6

Get ready to uncork some serious conversation, because on this episode of the Adult Beverage Film Podcast, we’re diving headfirst into Sean Baker’s wild and wonderful “Anora”! And who better to help us navigate this intoxicating tale than special guest Nicholas Brown, a camera assistant with an impressive resume, including gigs on shows like The Righteous Gemstones, Halloween Ends, Outer Banks, and Mr. Mercedes! Nicholas is also the mastermind behind The Second Sticks Podcast and a co-host of Focus Puller At Work Podcast, so he knows a thing or two about the real magic that happens behind the camera – and perhaps, the real magic that happens after a few too many celebratory beverages on set!

Joining Nicholas and our usual spirited crew are the fabulous hosts of the Adult Beverage Film Podcast: Kent Smith, our award-winning producer, director, and camera expert; Patrick G. Keenan, an award-winning actor with over 61 films to his name; Laura Truman, our resident film critic and old-school film collector; and last but certainly not least, Carlisle “Squeaker” Hamrick, our “Audio Genius and the boy who hates everything.”

“Anora” follows the whirlwind romance between Ani, a Brooklyn stripper, and Vanya, the ridiculously rich, slightly-too-young son of a Russian oligarch. It’s a modern-day Cinderella story, if Cinderella’s carriage was a private jet to Vegas and her glass slipper was a very expensive fur coat. We’ll be clinking glasses and discussing how this seemingly fairytale romance quickly devolves into a hilarious, chaotic, and ultimately heartbreaking ordeal when Vanya’s family gets wind of the impromptu nuptials. Think Pretty Woman meets a high-stakes, vodka-fueled chase scene through Brooklyn! We’ll explore how Baker, known for his raw and authentic portrayals of marginalized communities, takes us on a journey that’s both laugh-out-loud funny and deeply poignant. We’ll ponder questions like: How much alcohol does it take to truly fall in love? What kind of “adult beverage” pairs best with an unexpected, international annulment drama? And just how many shots do you need to forget you just married a Russian oligarch’s son?

Our hosts and Nicholas, with their collective on-set experience and film knowledge, will offer some fascinating insights into the craft of filmmaking that brings such a vibrant, chaotic world to life. We’ll discuss the incredible performances, particularly Mikey Madison as Ani, and how the film manages to balance its screwball comedy elements with genuine emotional depth. So pour yourself a stiff one, because this episode promises to be a rollicking good time, with a splash of cinematic wisdom and a chaser of questionable life choices!

Sinners isn’t your typical vampire flick—it’s a gritty, soulful ride through the dark alleys of temptation and redemption. Emilia Pérez (Jacques Audiard): Episode 056- S6

In this episode of the Adult Beverage Film Podcast, we dive headfirst into Emilia Pérez, the wildly original musical crime drama from visionary director Jacques Audiard (A Prophet, Dheepan). Equal parts telenovela, narco-thriller, courtroom drama, and Broadway musical, this genre-blending fever dream follows Rita, an ambitious lawyer trapped in a corrupt system, who is hired to help a brutal Mexican cartel leader transition—not out of crime, but into the woman she’s always known she was meant to be.

What begins as a high-stakes legal thriller morphs into a glittery saga of gender identity, justice, and the longing for redemption. Starring a commanding Karla Sofía Gascón as the titular Emilia, with standout performances from Zoe Saldaña and Selena Gomez, Emilia Pérez is as audacious as it is heartfelt—swinging from bloody betrayal to euphoric ballads without missing a beat.

So, grab a cocktail, dim the lights, and tune in—because this episode of the Adult Beverage Film Podcast is one hell of a show!
